Strathmore rugby teams clinched a double at the Impala Floodlit tournament, surprising many by winning the Club's title and the inugural Unversities title at the Resolution Health Impala Floodlit tournament held on Saturday, 16th April.
The University side, Leos pipped KCB 28-12 after rallying from behind 5-12 at half time, becoming only the only second University side to win the annual tournament, now in its 29th year.
Leos Winger Felix Ayange led the comeback scoring a drop goal and two quick tries in a second half stand-out performance. Earlier in the day, Leos II outclassed Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 19-5 to lift the inaugural Universities title.
The final game started with some awesome teamwork from Leos. But the bankers settled down and virtually camped in Leos 22 and it paid dividends when flanker Ogot grounded the ball after a six-metre drive. Left winger Fabian Olando would then convert for a 7-0 lead.
Despite ferocious attacks from Lions, Leos defence was firm and only cracked when Mwanja sneaked through a try that Olando failed to convert.
Leos then slowly built their attack and Ayange scored their first try on their foray into KCB’s 22 to put the score at 5-12 at half time.
Leos came out forcefully with their wide play orchestrated by their super back three Ayange, Edwin Salamba and Mike Wanjala to completely cut the bankers’ first line tackles.
CB succumbed to pressure and conceded a penalty that Ken Andola gave in a touch before spreading the ball wide for classy five phases before Wanjala went for a touchdown.
Leos got two more centre post penalties but even though Andola missed, some individual brilliance by Ayange saw him curl in a drop goal to take the lead 13-12 with 20 minutes of play.
Ayange then had two more tries, and Wanjala added one more to take the final score to 28-12 in favour of Leos.
