Leos, Strathmore University’s rugby team will for the first time play in the final match of the Impala Floodlights tournament on Saturday, 16th April beginning at 7.30pm, after a pulsating semi-final birth againts Mwamba RFC.
Kenny Andola’s sudden death penalty kick gave Leos three points to beat Mwamba RFC 27-24 in the semi-final match last Saturday, 9th April. Leos will play KCB in the final match.
It was Mwamba who signaled their intent in the 6.00pm kick off with Chris Asego drilling over two penalties in the opening eleven minutes as they coasted to a 6-0 lead.
Andola’s corner flag try reduced the deficit to 6-5 before he converted the indefatigable Edwin Salamba’s touchdown, giving Strath a 12-6 lead.
Asego’s penalty brought Mwamba to within three points of Leos and when he converted Maurice Mbai’s try, Mwamba were back in the lead at 16-12, a lead they held to half time.
Substitute Mike Mutuku’s 47th minute try saw Mwamba go 21-12 up and when Asego drilled home another penalty in the 51st minute, it seemed as though Mwamba, leading 24-12, were home and dry.
But Leos still had some fight in them and took the game to Mwamba. Their incessant pressure paid when Felix Ayange’s 67th minute try brought the scores to 24-17 before Andola converted Mike Wanjala’s late try to tie the game at 24-24 with regulation time up.
Leos would edge ahead in extra time and when they were awarded a penalty in the second half of extra time, Andola held his nerve, drilling over this pressure kick that saw his side book a date against KCB in next weekend’s final.
Leo’s coach Mitch Ocholla was proud of his side’s fighting spirit and the fact that he has two sides competing in Saturday’s finals.
