Many may not be familiar with the name Jazmine Nuru, but if plans go according to the reigning Miss University Kenya, she will be a household name beyond the modeling world.

Nuru was selected to represent Kenya by the organization, Beauties for Africa, in an international event held in Seoul, South Korea, December last year.

She beat a host of other participants to join other winners from across the globe to represent Kenya in the annual competition. The pageant, held every year in South Korea, brought together beauty queens from different parts of the world who would then go and become peace corps in their respective countries. The main theme for last year’s pageant was to promote peace between North and South Korea.

21 year old Nuru, who is a Mass Communication student at Shang Tao Media Arts College in Nairobi, says she is a freelance model and not attached to any agency.

“My dream is to be a news anchor. Julie (Gichuru) is my role model...modeling is my hobby not my career,” says Nuru.

The tall, slender and light complexioned model says she liked the warmth of Korean people.

“It is so great that strangers smile and nod each other on the streets. Something which rarely happens in Nairobi,” observed Nuru.
She also liked the food, best being Gimchi which she could not deduce what it was prepared with. The weather, however, was a bit of a turn off because it happened to be snowing at the time.

The beauty queens participated in many events, the main one being the runway modeling where Nuru won a $1000 trouser designed by Korea’s best designer for the best walk.

Her title is opening up many competitions for her to participate in. Currently she is participating in Miss Kitengela which will come to an end during the Easter weekend. She thanks ‘Beauties of Africa’ organization for informing her about the Miss University pageant and organizing her participation.

Nuru unwinds by listening to music her favorite being reggae. She is also a gymnast, slowly developing into a contortionist though she cannot label herself one. Apart from keeping fit, this is one of the reason which makes her spent a large chunk of her time in the gymnasium working out. Due to the exposure she got from the competition, she plans to further her modeling career and also promote peace.
