24 students from different Uni’s in Kenya have been selected to feature in a forthcoming TV reality show dubbed ‘The Expedition’.

The show is part of CIC Insurance group’s drive to recruit the youth in the co-operative movement, through the ‘I am cooperator’ campaign.

The TV show will be shot in the outskirts of Nairobi and be aired in 13 episodes. It will engage participants in grueling physical challenges and demanding intellectual tasks, with the eventual winner getting an opportunity to intern at the International Cooperative Alliance in Sweden and CIC Insurance.

'The Expedition' reality show aims to nature and hone leadership skills in students, while at the same time creating awareness on the cooperative movement. CIC Insurance is spending 40 million on the ‘I am cooperator’ campaign and the reality show to recruit half a million youth in Kenya to join the cooperative movement, ahead of 2012 – declared the International Year of Cooperatives by the UN.

“We now need young and transformative leadership within these co-operative organizations to create a new impetus for growth and inculcate the culture of corporate governance that will unleash the sector’s potential,” said Mr. Dan Maanzo secretary in the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing

The campaign has already visited several universities including Moi, Egerton, UoN, Methodist, USIU, Nazarene and Daystar.

Two students have been selected to take part in 'The Expedition' including Maurice Ouma and Eunice Cheptoo from Moi University, Doreen Gakii and Samuel Mbithi from Daystar University, Abna Micheka and Jemimah Opati from Egerton University.

Already, the International Co-operative Alliance has announced a global artistic competition designed to encourage youth to creatively express their views on co-operative principles.

The competition launches at ICA General Assembly in Cancun, Mexico in November. A camera, an instrument or a voice is all entrants will need to be able to participate in the Coop’Art competition.

ICA wants to invite greater numbers of youth into the co-operative sector and Coop’Art is a galvanizing project. It was conceived by José Antonio Chavez, ICA's Youth Representative to the ICA Board.
