The government has made good its promise to close down 500 middle-level colleges which it says are not registered by closing four colleges in Eldoret town. This comes after the deadline issued by the Ministry of Higher Education lapsed last November.
According to the Ministry, 111 colleges have been admitting students without registration, while another 369 institutions have not bothered to renew their certificates, in spite of two warnings from the Ministry last year. Most of the colleges are Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions offering courses as aviation, computer, beauty, IT, accounting, media and communications.
“From the time we gave notice, 204 institutions made formal applications to the ministry and are at various stages of processing,” said Prof. Kiamba, PS in the Ministry.
He added that training institutions operating under other Acts of Parliament and Government authority, like public and private universities with charters, are, however, not affected by the national exercise.
Kiamba said all TVET institutions operating under the Education Act were once again reminded to display their registration certificates in their front offices for ease of reference by parents, students, ministry officials and the public.
He asked parents, guardians, sponsors and prospective applicants to first establish the status of these institutions before applying for admission.
