University students have a reason to smile thanks to the Kenya ICT board. A project dubbed ‘wezesha’ has packaged a student-friendly deal that will see bona fide University students get discounts on selected laptop purchases.

Nearly all University students from both private and public universities in Kenya are eligible with the few remaining Universities yet to confirm participation in the program. .

For one to acquire a laptop, he/she must register on the portal www.wezesha.co.ke. The student must have a national ID card and a student registration/identification card. University coordinator verifies and approves student registration online. After verification and approval, student gets the voucher through email. The voucher is worth $ 120.00, approximately Ksh 9,600.00. It is attached to email containing the voucher number, students name, national and students ID number.

Awarded students must be willing and able to top up the balance required not covered by the voucher. After receiving the voucher a student logs on to wezesha portal and selects his/her preferred model. There are numerous types with different specifications available. Once a student selects a preferred model , he/she presents the voucher plus the top up balance to partner computer dealers. However the voucher is only valid for a fortnight. In addition to the balance, the retailer will ask for a national and student identification card and the laptop voucher in hard copy.

Only genuine students are required to participate with serious repercussions to fraudsters. Presence of university coordinator ensures that the students receiving the voucher are genuine. Misrepresentation at the time of registration is highly discouraged and will lead to severe legal reprisals.

This programme is part of the Kenya Transparency and Community Infrastructure Project (TCIP) being implemented by the ICT Board and the Ministry of Communication and funded by the World Bank. The initiative was launched on 3rd December.

The funds available for this phase will provide an incentive for about 15,667 laptops. The incentive will be a fixed amount regardless of the specifications and the price of the laptop selected by the student. Five percent of the laptops have been allocated and reserved for students with special needs.

A contact centre responsible for providing support to university students with regard to registration, redeeming a voucher and interacting with respective retailer has been set-up. A list of numbers is available at the portal. Students can also get in touch through the email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The retailers available in the programme are Fones Direct Limited/Telkom Kenya, Safaricom, PC World/Airtel, WINCOMP Services Limited, Ravenzo trading.
